Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Emma Bray

Ovarian Cancer affects the ovaries and affects women, or anyone who has ovaries, mostly over the age of 50. It is the sixth most common cancer in women. It is often diagnosed during its later stages, which is why its important to know the symptoms as early diagnosis can mean it is more treatable.

In the UK, March is the month for taking action against ovarian cancer, and raising awareness of the signs and symptoms whilst providing support for everyone affected by ovarian cancer.

The main symptoms of ovarian cancer include:

  • a swollen tummy or persistent bloating

  • pelvic and/or abdominal pain

  • loss of appetite or feeling full quickly after eating

  • an urgent need to pee or needing to pee more often

Other, less common symptoms can include:

  • indigestion

  • constipation or diarrhoea

  • back pain

  • feeling tired all the time

  • losing weight unexpectedly

  • bleeding from the vagina after the menopause

These symptoms are very common and can be caused by many different conditions, but if you’ve had any of these symptoms for 4 weeks or more, and they are new to you, make an appointment to speak with your GP.
