Love Your Smile!

Emma Bray

National Smile Month is a campaign all about championing the benefits of having good oral health and promoting the value of a healthy smile, celebrated between 13th May and 13th June 2024.

According to statistics from the Oral Health Foundation almost 2 in 5 adults (39%) don’t visit a dentist regularly and around 6 million adults in the UK have had long-lasting pain (over two weeks) caused by toothache.

Not everyone has access to oral health, so maintaining a healthy smile can be simple for some but for so many this can be very difficult. Despite the improvements in oral health over the last 40 years, inequalities continue to be a burden for countless individuals. National Smile Month provides support to these groups and allows them to get access to education, advice and the oral care they require.

The key messages being promoted during National Smile Month for better oral health are:

  • Brushing teeth twice a day, morning and night with a fluoride toothpaste.

  • Cut down how much and how often you have sugary foods and drinks.

  • Visit a dentist regularly for check ups

A healthy smile not only benefits your mouth, it also helps you achieve better physical health and mental wellbeing. Some of the health problems that may be caused or made worse by poor oral health include:

  • Heart disease

  • Strokes

  • Diabetes

  • Giving birth to a premature or low-birth-weight baby

  • Respiratory (lung) disease

  • Dementia

National Smile Month is the perfect time to evaluate your oral health, improve your routine and help others around you to do the same. If you, or someone you know, has got into some bad habits, it’s never too late for you to make a positive change and improve your oral health. If you are concerned about your oral health then you should consider making an appointment with your dentist.
