Pride Month is an entire month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities all around the world! It's about acceptance, equality and a celebration of people coming together to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, but also to serve as a demonstration that there is still work to be done. Pride Month is also an opportunity to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ history and educate the general public about LGBTQ+ topics.
Pride Month is for everyone to embrace who they are and let the world know and celebrate the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals have had on history. The rainbow signifies the colourful activities of this month-long celebration. These include pride parades, parties, workshops, concerts, and countless more LGBTQ+ events to attract participants from all over. The Pride community takes huge pride in their movement, going all out for the festivities with costumes, makeup, and glitter!
There have been a number of activists and organisations who have been involved in the evolution and changes throughout the years. Pride Month started in the USA to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, which advanced the LGBT+ civil rights movement in the USA. The UK then followed in its footsteps by organising their own demonstrations and protests.
A lot of progress has been made for LGBTQ+ rights regarding issues such as marriage equality, but there is still more we can do to support the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month raises awareness of the issues that affect this community, whilst celebrating the people and work that has been done! It also calls for people to remember how damaging homophobia was and still can be. Pride is all about being proud of who you are no matter who you love.
