Children's Mental Health

Mental health affects us all, regardless of age. As parents and carers, there are ways you can support your children to give them the best chance to stay mentally healthy.

It can often be difficult to identify if your child is struggling, or something is upsetting them. Some signs to look out for may include:

  • significant changes in behaviour

  • ongoing difficulty sleeping

  • withdrawing from social situations

  • not wanting to do things they usually like

  • self-harm or neglecting themselves

Ways to support a child or young person:

  • Be there and listen - get them used to talking about their feelings and make sure they know you are always there to listen.

  • Support them through difficulties - help them through any behavioural issues, and understand any challenging behaviour

  • Stay involved in their life - show interest in what is important to them and what they are up to

  • Encourage their interests - let them explore interests and encourage anything new they are wanting to try

  • Take what they say seriously - listen to what they say to make them feel valued

  • Build positive routines - structure and routine can promote positive mental health; sleep, eating and exercise are good examples of this.

If you're worried or unsure, there is lots of support out there:
